| statement
These paintings are an extension of my interest in tonal drawing and an appreciation for the painted mark. Representational painting presents a contradiction of identity that I find to be both fascinating and sustaining. The image of the painting implies a broad host of things but will never exist as anything more than a flat arrangement of shapes, no matter how convincing the illusion. This marriage of truth and fiction is reflected again in the imagery I find most appealing.
These two paintings are part of an ongoing exploration of narrative. The imagery reflects my interest in figuration and machine forms. The machines mediate the interaction of the figures. This system of indirect interaction is a satirical comment on contemporary technology-filled social systems. The machines can be viewed as metaphors for intentional alienation and social phobia.
