statement

In my work I explore the possibilities and limitations of painting.

By editing paint, canvas and framework in a specific way I create paintings in which contrasting layers of different geometric shapes alternates with sections of stretcher bars and raw canvas. I use the framework and the raw canvas not only as a carrier for the painted image, but give it a visual function as well by making it part of the composition. This allows the underlying structure to enter into a dialogue with paint.

This and other invisible processes such as how paint bleeds through the backside of the painting are based on a fascination for our limitations of perception. I analyze how the different materials relate to each other and how it affects our vision. I strive for a balance between internal and external aspects of the painting in which I often use white for its quality to create flatness and depth, form and emptiness, harmony and optical contradictions between the different materials.
