statement
I am a photographer and filmmaker living and working in Philadelphia. A native Vermonter with strong ties to Nova Scotia, my practice is highly influenced by the environments in which I live and travel.
My early work evolved from a curiosity in the conversation between motion and exposure. This interest led to a photographic meditation on geological time: seconds and minutes layered onto a single light-sensitive surface. Using large and medium format negatives, I recorded interactive experiences of temporality, the duration of which implied stillness out of movement.
In 2003 I began experimenting with moving images. Initially a linear comparison for her long-exposure stills, my exploration eventually led to graduate school and an MFA in film and media arts. My films are now an independent practice that includes both narrative and documentary work.
As a photographer-filmmaker, my formal concerns include composition and the politics of framing, fragmentation and the evocation of desire, asymmetry and its relationship to surprise, and the mutable expressions of time through moving subject or moving camera.
I currently teach film and media courses at the University of the Arts and Temple University in Philadelphia. My work has been exhibited and screened across the USA, Canada, South America, and Europe.
My film work has been screened in Brazil, Wales, Ireland, and across the United States.
