According to the Sky

A recent move brought me close to the coast and reawakened a long held fascination with the sea. Floating and daydreaming while immersed in the salt water, lines from a Sylvia Plath poem that I read as a teenager ran repeatedly through my head:

We are not what we might be;
what we are Outlaws all extrapolation
Beyond the interval of now and here:
White whales are gone with the white ocean.

In this ongoing series, I am viewing the indefinable sea through a magical and melancholic lens. It is a connection to the cosmos, a backdrop and central character. Ideas about the sea are filtered through mythology, alchemy, poetry and astronomy to create narrative based images. The photographs are made in the water and on the shore, a division and space that is perpetually transforming.

The images are split toned to give a nod to traditional darkroom practices and to reference the sought after philosophers' stone and its ability to transform base metal to gold. The photographs mix analog and digital; reality and imagination. The square images are captured with a medium format film camera and the circular images with a DSLR. They are printed with archival inks on hand coated Hosho paper.
