statement
My starting point is an interest in the beauty and complexity of the natural world with a focus on its structures, patterns and cycles. I think about verbs more than nouns, and want to convey a sense of energy, growth, and moving through time. I am fascinated by the buzz of life and the ephemeral quality of a passing moment. The forms in my paintings and drawings are abstract, but often evoke a sense of plants, birds, biological systems, or even microscopic realms. I allow for multiple layers of meaning in the work.
Cyanotype is an alternative photo/printing process that creates a cyan blue print through UV exposure. The prints can be toned and exposed in multiple layers. I have been exploring the use of the cyanotype liquid as a drawing medium. The "Blue Suspension" series involves direct drawing with the medium and the toning agent. These drawings are more minimal than my paintings, but stem from the same ideas and references. Overall, I am very engaged in process as an artist, and my work mirrors the way I attempt to find order and balance in the chaos of my own life.
