statement

My drawings connect me to the landscape around me here in Southeastern Ohio. The humidity and heat, the surrounding communities, are all embedded in my skin and in my psyche and are connected to me physically and emotionally. But these direct perceptions are darkened, distorted, and dislocated by the disturbing information about the world presented to me by the media , especially the 80 channels my Direct TV satellite brings into my home. I have come to see that this digitalized global world subconsciously affects my choice of subject matter and my formal decisions. The conjunction of these optical and abstract perceptions is the point at which my images originate. In this way my paintings gather the flux of changing landscape elements into a still image, one that I can contemplate slowly, meditate on.

These 21'x58" erasure drawings were done in the back of my Ford Econoline van. I drive around until I see a subject that I have learned through experience has the potential to express my darkening sense of our times.
