Description:
This course uses abstraction as a lens for understanding and refining the formal language of drawing. In Abstract Drawing, students move beyond representation to explore the expressive potential of line, shape, value, texture, and space. Through guided projects and critical discussion, you'll examine how abstraction can clarify compositional structure, reveal rhythm and balance, and heighten visual impact. This is not about making decorative or purely expressive work—it's about using abstraction as a disciplined way to strengthen formal sensitivity, develop a more intentional visual vocabulary, and increase awareness of the impact of your chosen materials. Students should be comfortable with basic drawing concepts and prepared to challenge their habits and assumptions. This course is ideal for those looking to experiment while staying grounded in strong design principles.
This class will cover the following topics:
• Deepen your understanding of composition, rhythm, balance, and mark-making through abstract approaches to drawing.
• Experiment with a variety of tools and materials to develop your own visual language.
• Learn how abstraction can clarify and enhance formal decisions in all types of artmaking.
• Explore historical and contemporary abstract art for inspiration and context.
