Description

The Portrait is all about getting to know the human face—inside and out. In this course, you’ll study the structure of the head through both observational and construction-based drawing methods. Working from a live model, you’ll learn to capture accurate proportions, likeness, and expression while deepening your understanding of facial anatomy and how it interacts with light. Along the way, you’ll look at both classical and contemporary approaches to portraiture, drawing inspiration from a range of artists and traditions. With guided demos, critiques, and plenty of practice, you’ll build the skills and confidence needed to draw the human face with clarity and presence.

This class will cover the following topics:

• Learn the foundational structure of the head and face through observation and construction methods.

• Practice drawing from a live model to develop accuracy in proportion, likeness, and expression.

• Explore portraiture in both classical and contemporary styles for inspiration.

• Study key anatomical landmarks and how they affect form and light.

• Build confidence and fluency in rendering the human face across multiple poses and views.

Level of Study: Intermediate

You’ve got the basics down, and now you’re ready to sharpen your skills, take on more challenges, and push your work further. Intermediate-level art courses are intended for students who have some foundational experience and are ready to refine their skills and deepen their understanding of technique, composition, and creative expression. These courses often assume familiarity with basic tools and concepts, allowing for more complex challenges, longer projects, and critical feedback. Ideal for those looking to build on prior training—whether self-taught or formal—these courses help you strengthen your personal voice and prepare for more advanced study.
