Description:

As painters, we often focus on what we are painting, but it is equally important to understand what we are painting on. In this workshop, we will learn how to properly construct canvases and box panels from start to finish as well as some basic framing techniques for both styles of painting substrate.

This workshop will cover the following topics:

• Learn to assemble a stretcher and stretch a canvas.
• Learn to build a box panel
• Learn how to properly prepare a panel or canvas for oil paint application
• Learn how to build and assemble a simple floating frame and gallery frame from start to finish.

By the end of Fabricating a Painting, students will be comfortable with a selection of basic woodworking tools, associated technical vocabulary, and the essential processes involved in making canvas and wooden painting substrates. Each participant will create one stretched canvas, one birch veneer box panel, and at least one type of frame to fit one of these surfaces.

Fee:
$230 (This includes all necessary wood, fasteners, canvas, personal protective equipment, and tools.)
