Description
Introduction to Etching is a 4-week course allowing students to have a basic understanding of the copper plate etching process. This course will cover plate preparation, hardground line etching, aquatint, and the printing process. While enrolled in Introduction to Etching, participants may attend open print lab hours outside of instruction hours for no additional cost for the duration of the 4-week introductory course.

• Safety procedures and emergency equipment
• Press use expectations
• Cleanup responsibilities
• Tool/material policies
• Building rules
• Shared studio etiquette
• Sign-in, reservation, and access procedures
• Plate preparation
• Hardground line etching
• Aquatint
• Printing

Note: The Printmaking Studio has scrapers, burnishers, and needle tools available for check-out.

No experience? No problem! Or, perhaps you’re returning to art after a hiatus. Beginner-level courses are designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in making art. These courses focus on building confidence, developing foundational skills, and encouraging creative exploration.

LOCATION: Unless otherwise specified, all courses are hosted at Manifest's new facility at 'M1' in Clifton at 3464 Central Parkway (see map and directions below). Manifest's new facility provides multiple studio classrooms, private lesson space, a darkroom, a film processing room, a state of the art printmaking wing, and a multi-purpose lecture and class meeting space as well as on-site parking, grounds, and exterior spaces in which to relax, discuss, and make art. The studios are outfitted with professional equipment, furniture, and study aids.

About the instructor:
Alyssa Baker (BFA, University of Cincinnati DAAP; MFA Candidate, Clark University) is a Cincinnati-based printmaker and mixed-media artist. Alyssa’s BFA is focused in printmaking as well as being employed as a lab associate at the University of Cincinnati Printmaking Lab prior to joining Manifest. Her focus at UC’s Printmaking Lab was in participant safety and instruction, leading screenprinting workshops, private lithography and etching lessons, and maintaining lab equipment.
