Description:
How we understand lived experience is often guided by the personal and cultural myths we embrace. But what shapes these stories? And in what ways do they change the way we move through the world?
This class will offer methods for thinking about metaphor, place, and belonging through exercises in attention. Writing, drawing, object-making, and painting will be components of this class as it explores the slippery boundaries between image/object relationships. Historical examples will be shared to demonstrate how these creative practices have intermingled with cultural objects as methods of storytelling and myth-making throughout time.
This class will cover the following topics:
- Building personal formal systems (a personal syntax) to create affect in observational painting.
- (How does the way that you handle your medium change the way we see the space? What are the qualities of how you are handling material? We will work on mark-making exercises to control compositional affect, and use various mediums to achieve the desired goal.)
- Connecting intangible feelings about, or experiences with, an environment to tangible/perceptual formal devices.
- (How can you start defining qualities in objects/spaces/figures that you are drawn to? How do you archive this? When do you use it?)
- Explore varying material supports to engage Painting’s relationship with touch.
- Work with transparency exercises in collage to embrace failure, play, experimentation, and creative thinking.
