Description

The concept of the destructive and the re-creative is explored in this three-day workshop studying anatomical awareness of the figure and expressive abstraction all within the context of the “palimpsest”.*

Visiting artist Nick Reszetar will lead students as they work with a spectrum of materials ranging from the most essential (charcoal, graphite, paper) to mixed media (gesso, gessoed paper, canvas, mylar, ink, pastels, rust and more). Two models will be engaged in dynamic poses throughout the duration of the workshop while students work on multiple pieces at the same time to allow for the evolution of multiple ideas.

These works will serve as physical explorations, and more importantly, psychological investigations that will provide students with a platform for artistic innovation and growth regardless of their normal selection of media.

* A manuscript showing both an original, erased writing as well as a new writing.

Cost
$280
(materials not included)

Materials

  • Paper – Single Sheets and Rolls
  • For large drawings, a component of this workshop, we recommend rolls of paper. These are economical, versatile and easy to ship. Single sheets are helpful for gestures, studies, and collage work.
  • Textured, high-quality charcoal paper is also recommended. Sheets should be 18” x 24” or 24” x 36”. Some suggestions for paper include Utrecht American Masters, Strathmore 500, Rising Stonehenge, Rives BFK Heavyweight, and Blick White Sulphite Paper (sheets only).
  • Gesso – You may wish to experiment with drawing on a gessoed surface. The quality of gesso can be dramatic when it comes to a creating a good drawing surface. A recommended gesso is A>2 Chroma Gesso from Nasco Arts and Crafts Supply part #9725777. It is dryer and grittier than most, an excellent surface for drawing.
  • Have any boards or paper rolls you would like to use prepared before the workshop. Dilute gesso with water about 1:1, apply with roller and immediately brush out roller marks as you apply across the surface.

A variety of of additional drawing materials will be recommended. A detailed list is available upon request (email us here) and will also be provided upon receipt of registration.
