statement
Hyper examination of the tumbledown reveals the ordinary to be exceptional.
Walking in the woods, I am regularly confronted with massive, upended tree roots, textured tree barks, patterned burls. Perhaps because of boredom or reverie, gnarly shapes grab my attention and incite my curiosity.
It is satisfying to make sense of a seemingly arbitrary jumble of vines, or some other natural form and, through fine lines and shading, allow it to develop into a coherent 'whole'.
I am also attracted to junctures at which two disparate parts join. Through editing, changing scale and repetitious mark-making, I create, in my mind, abstracted vignettes, derived from nature but re-scripted into dispassionate arrangements.
I approach drawing, for the most part, with confidence. I'm sure it's because, as a child, doodling and drawing was as as automatic as learning to write. The marks are immediate and direct and allows me to focus attention on relationships between parts and gradations of light and shade.
