statement
A drawing is fragile, simple, poignant. It is to the point. It carries neither the grandiose weight of an oil painting nor the solidity of a sculpture but rather brings its own brand of intensity. Made up of scratchy, hurried marks, languid lines, effusive smears, erratic erasures and redrawn lines - a drawing lets slip its own history. A drawing is quietly honest.
This is unsurprising given drawing is our first form of written language – before spelling and grammar are introduced to punctuate thoughts and bookend ideas. Before the tiny lines that make up letters tidy away our freedom. Thus, drawing for me is more of an instinctive move than a deliberate choice of primary practice.
My work is underpinned by the concept of fragility, whether related to the process of memory, language or the self. My practice combines portraiture and elements of nature, inferring an inherent connection between the two, and denoting life cycles.
Typically my figures float on a white ground, with a focus on the head and face. The body is reduced to a select ensemble of simply drawn lines, whereby underlining the precariousness of life, evoking a sense of otherworldliness and highlighting the concept of a person as a soul.
