statement
My mixed media works in fluid acrylics, ink and collage examine the idea of flow and the fragile balance between order and chaos. The word flow brings many associations to mind ranging from a concrete description of particle movement to abstract ideas about achieving optimal levels of engagement in human experiences (Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's research).
A balancing of dualities is a primary interest to me and is reflected in both the aesthetic and process of my artwork. I combine elements of structure and stability such as grid patterns, horizontal and vertical bands and patterns from Japanese woodblock prints with organic splashes of paint and spontaneous strokes of my paintbrush. I begin with a quick pouring, brushing and splattering of paint and deliberate upon this foundation by introducing layers in Photoshop before returning back to painting, drawing, and collaging. In this way, animated compositions that invoke movements like twisting, exploding, rotating, falling and floating eventually find their end and balance point.
